Thomson & ScottWine ReviewThomson & Scott Noughty Sparkling

November 13, 2021by Jonathan Lambrianidis

I recently picked up another bottle of Thomson and Scott Noughty Sparkling as it had been such a long time between popping corks. So how does it hold up against all the amazing new entrants?

The Thomson & Scott Noughty Sparkling is an organic, fruity & balanced non alcoholic sparkling wine with a fresh taste & aroma made up of crisp apple & melon. With a creamy mouthfeel, vibrant carbonation & body that carries a hint of fruity sweetness before being finished with tart crispness.

Noughty Sparkling Wine Taste

The Noughty Sparkling Wine tastes really similar to champagne! You’re going to find a balanced profile of apple, green melon and fruity notes with a crisp and clean finish. If you love a mouthfeel that is vibrant with carbonation, you’re going to really enjoy the Noughty Sparkling.

Looking at flavour there the main notes you’ll pick up in each glass will be a balancing act of fruit, sweetness, and clean vibrant crispness. Made with 100% Spanish grown Chardonnay grapes the Noughty sparkling brings a vibrantly carbonated sparkling that is characterised by:

  • lightly oaked aromas which are complemented by clean and lightly sweet apple;
  • green apple and melon fruits;
  • a vibrant and creamy body coming from great carbonation; and
  • crisp, pointed and clean finish.

As it naturally warms in the glass the flavours become a little rounder and it, naturally, loses its sharpness. Just a good excuse to pour it and drink it before too long!

What I Like

Things to Consider

Not too sweet + crisp and clean taste profile Compared to other options the depth of flavour is a little lighter.
Carbonation and mouthfeel are vibrant and really enjoyable. Availability at mainstream retail is limited making it a little more difficult to track down.

With so many great non-alcoholic sparkling options entering the fold, options like the Vinada Crispy Chardonnay and Airen Gold, Oddbird and Barton & Guest all bring big flavour to the table and maybe ones to consider as well.

Thomson & Scott Noughty Where to Buy.

The Noughty costs approximately $22 – $25 per bottle and is available online through the major non-alcoholic retailers, making it easy to pick up online when you’re stocking up. It is however a little harder to pick up in-store with limited distribution.

Below are some links to help you track a bottle or six down and get started with or restock some Noughty.

Is Noughty Sparkling Wine Worth It?

The Noughty Sparkling Wine has been one of the first options I ever tried in the non-alc space. Since trying, testing, comparing and reviewing over 100 non-alc options it still stacks up extremely impressively!

Like I mentioned above, you might notice it has a little less depth and flavour than the similar options from Vinada and the Oddbird (noting the Barton and Guest is an entirely different yet amazing flavour profile).

That said if you enjoy a semi-dry, crisp and fruity sparkling this one is definitely one to try. Personally, I quite enjoy it and it lands a 7.5/10 for me.

Currently, my go-to 100% Chardonnay non-alcoholic sparkling is the Vinada and I’d recommend getting them both, trying them side-by-side and seeing which one suits your taste profile as they’re both solid options that are slightly different in their sweetness and flavour profile.

If you’ve got space in your fridge, definitely dedicate a slot for the Noughty!

Enjoying Non-Alcoholic Sparkling

When to Enjoy Thomson & Scott Noughty

Given the zero alcohol content, the Noughty is perfect with a meal, as an aperitif or to celebrate. Beyond the standard pre-dinner nibbles, the Noughty would pair well with fish and rice dishes.

On the risotto front, I’m picturing a lighter risotto with fresh vegetables and chicken!

The crisp finish really makes this a sparkling that is easy to drink and one that you ‘want’ another glass of.

How to Enjoy Non-Alcoholic Sparkling

The Thomson and Scott is best enjoyed straight out of the fridge when it is vibrant bead of carbonation and is fresh and crisp.

As I sit writing this I have another glass of it poured into my Spiegelau champagne glasses which add a little character to the experience with their slightly bowled base and great shape.

If you’re looking for some reasonably priced glassware, you can check them out over on Amazon here (USA Link here). Note that the AU store is the prosecco variant which is for all intents and purposes the same glass only slightly bigger.

The Wrap Up: Final Thoughts

Drinking this for quite a few months means I’ve had a few bites at the cherry and in the case of the Noughty it still stacks up really quite well due to the crisp flavour profile and well-weighted mouthfeel.

More recently options from the likes of Vinada have taken the lead for me and are going to be hard to beat. This by no means short changes the Noughty, in fact, it goes to show the strength of the non-alcoholic sparkling category where we have so many great options that we’re spoilt for choice.

If you get a chance, I’d recommend picking a bottle up and giving it a go, however, given the lack of ‘on the ground’ distribution you’ll need to pick it up online. Again the links are down below:
