Wine ReviewWolf BlassWolf Blass Zero Shiraz

November 23, 2021by Jonathan Lambrianidis

Alcohol-free shiraz has always fallen a little flat, however as I drink my way through a second bottle of the Wolf Blass Zero Shiraz and I’m impressed with how the Wolf Blass team have bucked the trend!

The Wolf Blass Zero Shiraz comes in at a score of 8/10 due to its deep and complex flavour profile that is built on, spices, dark fruits and plum, all while having a warm and lingering oak-based finish. For most people, it is going to be the best option compared to those currently on the market.

Wolf Blass Zero Shiraz Taste

If you have been sceptical of non-alcoholic red wine, you’re not alone. In fact, you’re likely to be in the majority and there haven’t been too many options that make me want to buy a second bottle. I am excited to say the Wolf Blass Zero Shiraz is here to change all that.

Packed with a refined, balanced and complex flavour profile the Wolf Blass Zero Shiraz has a full flavour profile that so many non-alcoholic options fail to come close to. In each glass you’re going to find:

  • Dark fruit notes of plum, cherry and berries.
  • Hints of sweetness (though negligible compared to almost every other option, but sweeter than all alcoholic wine).
  • Warm spiced notes that build into a short yet flavourful body.
  • Mouth-filling oak profile.
  • Tannins that provide a mouth-drying finish.

What I Like

Things to Consider

The depth and complexity of flavour that highlights dark fruits without overly juicy sweetness. If you’re new to non-alcoholic wine keep in mind this won’t have the heat, power or weight of a traditional alcoholic Shiraz and will technically be ‘sweet’ in comparison.
Oak-based warmth and the tannin based finish give a traditional wine feel.

The Wolf Blass Zero Shiraz takes the top spot for a non-alcoholic red wine in my opinion and I’m glad the team have taken the time to get this one right as it shows in quality and taste! I’m excited to see how things continue to improve.

Let’s dive into who the Wolf Blass Zero Shiraz is for and where you can find a bottle.

Who Is The Wolf Blass Zero Shiraz For?

If you love red wine and have been struggling to find a suitable option that has the flavour profile without the sugary or sometimes plain weird overlay then you’re going to really enjoy what the alcohol-free Wolf Blass Shiraz has to offer.

Like I mentioned above, keep in mind that the weight of the body and heat of a traditional shiraz won’t be present (which is simply the science of removing alcohol). However, from a flavour depth and complexity perspective, I feel like you’re going to be happy to indulge in a glass or two.

The lighter weighted body will see this suit drinkers from a shiraz drinker all the way through to Sangiovese and Pinot Noir drinkers as the lack of alcohol means all the deep and complex flavours without the power that some find a little much.

That said, it is currently this my non-alcoholic red wine of choice and pips the Funky Monkey Pinot due to the greater level of flavour depth and complexity.

When to Drink The Wolf Blass Zero Shiraz

The Wolf Blass Zero Shiraz is going to be a perfect companion when matched with a rich pappardelle Ragu or flame-grilled meats and vegetables. If you are planning on cooking up something rich delectable and comforting it will hold its own and compliment your efforts in the kitchen.

The fact that the Zero Shiraz won’t be overpowered by rich foods is a real testament to the quality of the wine. Away from the dinner table, it will also be perfectly at home being enjoyed on its own or on a cold winter night when you have settled in for the night with a Netflix marathon with that block of quality dark chocolate.

For me, this is one to pair with that beautiful Ragu and experience all the amazing complementary flavours that come from the food and wine.

The Wrap Up: Final Thoughts

I must say I am thoroughly impressed by the Wolf Blass Shiraz and the refined palette that brings with it a full body and those deep and dark fruit notes of plum, spices, oak and cherry.

It is no easy task to piece together a full-bodied and flavourful red when you have the alcohol to lean on for support which means it is extremely difficult to land it when the alcohol is absent.

While the weight is not there and there is a noticeable gap where we all expect the alcohol to live the depth, flavour profile and warm finish makes this, in my opinion, the best non-alcoholic red wine I have reviewed to date.

I hope you’re excited to give this a go and manage to track down a bottle. If you do manage to find it drop me an email over at Jonathan@tipplezero.com and let me know what you thought of it.

So that wraps this one up, the Wolf Blass Zero Shiraz lands itself a solid 8 / 10.
