Gruvi Sour Weisse Taste
If you’re looking to give your taste buds a true wow moment, I’ve found it for you with the Gruvi Sour Weisse. Like all great sour beer options, it is a great contradiction of flavour in the best possible way. All of this with only 35 calories per can.
The Gruvi Sour Weisse is a contrasting sour beer that begins with a big bout of tart sourness, before giving way to a rounded and complex suite of malt and wheat notes.
Each glass of the Sour Weisse is going to bring you an amazing profile that is built around:
- an effervescent mouthfeel with lots of small lively bubbles; into
- a tart, sharp and pointed sourness that is citrus-based; into
- deep malt and wheat-based body the grows and builds between mouthfuls; and
- a champagne-like sharpness and yeasty notes for a refined lingering finish.
Picking up the reference to champagne above, once in your glass, the light haze, bubbles and overall colour immediately remind you of champagne with a slight orange tinge.
What is amazing is the way the foamy head plays out once you’ve poured this into a glass, it bubbles away like an effervescent then dissipates right before your eyes – it’s pretty great to see.
What I Like |
Things to Consider |
The great pointed sour notes that give way to a rounded malty and wheat noted base. | Needless to say if you don’t like sour beer, you might want to consider skipping this one. |
The mouthfeel is really different and enjoyable | If you’re not the biggest fan of a malty backbone or yeasty notes keep in mind you’ll find them after the sourness resides. |

Who Is The Gruvi Sour Weisse For?
The Gruvi Sour Weisse is for champagne drinkers, seasoned beer drinkers and gin drinkers alike. The only prerequisite to enjoying the Sour Weisse is enjoying that lemon sourness.
For the beer drinkers out there, provided you enjoy sourness in your life, if you’re looking for a beer that is going to break the trend of malty Pale Ales, IPAs, and Lagers (which are great mind you) this is one you’re going to love.
For the champagne drinkers, if you are ok with the wheat and malt notes that come with beer, you’re going to enjoy this one too as I found the profile and body were so similar in their style.
If you’re a whiskey, gin or cocktail drinker and enjoy your favourite whiskey sour or maybe you’ve enjoyed a supremely sour Brunswick cocktail at Brunswick Aces, this is going to be right up your alley.
If you want to sample a few beers that are in the same realm of the Gruvi I’d point you in the direction of the range from Molly Rose, specifically the Molly Rose Strawberry Gose which has a brilliant sour yet sweet profile which you can read all about here.
Where To Buy Gruvi Sour Weisse.
If you’re looking to buy the Gruvi Sour Weisse, buying online through retailers like Brunswick Aces and Craft Zero are going to be your easiest option. From a cost perspective, this will land around $19 – $21 for a 4-pack
If the above sounds like a good idea, the links to Aces and Craft Zero are down below:
Be sure to pour this one out into a glass and let that effervescent head fizz and foam away right before your eyes – I use my trusty Spiegelau Craft Tasting Kit that helps dial the non-alc beer’s to eleven for what is a really reasonable amount per individual glass.
Check out the price and all the kit has involved in it on Amazon (approx. AUD$45 – $55). If you’re in the US, the Amazon US link can be found here.
Gruvi Sour Weisse Nutrition
At only 35 calories per can or 9.8 calories per 100ml, the Gruvi Sour Weise is likely to be one of the lowest-calorie non-alcoholic beers currently on the market for the next while. It is sugar-free, fat-free and has 110mg of potassium and 15mg of calcium.
Like I touched on above, the best piece to keep in mind is that it is completely sugar-free and only 35 calories per serve which is remarkable given the flavour in this beer.

When to Enjoy The Gruvi Sour Weisse
This is a non-alcoholic sour best enjoyed with those spicy and/or fatty foods. I really see this brew working perfectly with a combination of both.
Imagine a glass of this sour up against a spicy beef taco with the sound of Spanish tunes and a bustling atmosphere in the background. It has everything you need to cut through the spicy and silky side of the food and freshen things up.
Alternatively, I’d love this with some properly weighted cheeses for the same reason to cut through the fat and liven things up a little.
(P.s. – every time I write this section, I get so, so hungry often end up adding places to the ‘Post COVID bucket list’.)
The Wrap Up: Final Thoughts
The Gruvi Sour Weisse is fantastic, truly – the flavour the Gruvi team have packed in for a tiny 35 calories and only 8 grams of carbohydrate is absolutely mindboggling.
If you have ever thought low calorie alcohol free beer meant low flavour that excuse ends today, unfortunately, it also means that any beers going forward with the same calories will be held to a higher standard now we know what is possible.
If you’re looking to an exciting, vibrant and different take on non-alcoholic beer I’d implore you to get your hands on the Gruvi. I’ve dropped the links below for your cast your eye over and check out a pack or two.
