After drinking the entire Sobah Beer range 12 months I thought it was time to finally piece together a full Sobah Beer Review and give you the low down of what each beer has to offer!

Sobah Beer creates a range of iconic Australian non alcoholic beers. Brewed with ingredients indigenous to Australia, the alcohol free range of Soba Beers includes core range of the Pepper berry IPA, Finger Lime Cerveza and the Lemon Aspen Pils

1. Sobah Pepperberry IPA Review

I remember drinking the Sobah Pepper berry IPA when I first came into non-alcoholic beer and it is one to reach for if you are wanting something different to break up the traditional lager and IPA options.

The Sobah Pepper berry IPA is a fruity, light and crisp non-alcoholic IPA with hints of pepper berry, a lightly sweet base and lingering bitter finish. It is also good for you and supports hydration and recovery due to it being packed with added Potassium and Magnesium.

Sobah Pepperberry IPA Taste

As a whole, the Pepperberry IPA has a sweet malty base, complemented by flavours of pepper berry and summery fruits. The fruity sweet profile is then finished off with a pointed and lingering bitterness to finish.

With a mid-level of mouthfeel and a light level of carbonation, the Sobah IPA is an alcohol-free beer that is super easy to drink as a sessionable beer enjoy on a hot summer afternoon.

I’d love to hear what you think it tastes like, as I’ve been drinking this for so much of 2021 and keep coming back to fruity notes of peach in each glass.

Who Would Like The Pepperberry IPA

The Pepperberry IPA is going to be for people who enjoy a fruity IPA that balances malty sweetness with bitterness. Alternatively, the Sobah IPA is for anyone looking for a unique take on a non-alcoholic IPA due to the use of Australian pepper berry!

The taste profile reminded me quite a bit of the Uwe IPA which is a beer to look out for if you like what the Sobah has to offer. If you are looking for a more traditional IPA, you absolutely have to read my reviews about the Vandestreek Playground IPA and the Big Drop Paradiso IPA!

2. Sobah Finger Lime Cerveza Review

Sobah Finger Lime Cerveza Can in Hand

Drinking the Sobah Finger Lime Cerveza for the first time, expect to be treated to a world of flavour and a world of different.

The Sobah Finger Lime Cerveza is based around the main flavour of Australian Finger Lime and a lightly sweet malted base. It stays true to the Cerveza style and has a soft finish without much in the way of bitterness.

Sobah Finger Lime Cerveza Taste

The Sobah Finger Lime Cerveza is a fruity and citrus based Cerveza built around flavours of Australian Finger lime and sweet baked apple. While it contains a low bitterness rating, it does finish with a tang from the lime that is sure to please Cerveza drinkers.

The Cerveza style of beer is traditionally light in mouthfeel and texture and the Sobah Cerveza continues down this trend and is both:

  • light on the level of carbonation; and
  • relatively light in the level of mouthfeel.

I found that each beer in the Sobah range was much more enjoyable out of a glass, and I’d recommend you give them a pour into a glass if you can.

Given the complexity of flavour in each brew, they do better when allowed to grow and build in the space that a proper drinking glass gives.

If you’ve read my content, you know how much I love my Spiegelau Beer Tasting Kit that I picked up from Amazon earlier this year. Read more about them in my post about non-alcoholic lager here or check the price of them over on Amazon AU (USA Link) to learn more.

Will I Like The Finger Lime Cerveza

The Finger Lime Cerveza is an easy to drink option that makes it perfect as a mid-week option no matter what is going on in the outside world. It would be perfect as a pre-dinner drink by the fire, with dessert, or (my personal favourite) on the beach with fish and chips.

The Australian Finger Lime is going to split the room and is likely to lead people to love it or leave it due to the striking sensation that finger lime gives.

Personally, I think this beer shines when you’re eating some Friday night takeaway or with dessert given:

  • the citrus helps cut through flavour in the case of takeaway, and
  • the sweetness of the baked apple notes helps compliment sweeter desserts.

The Sobah Lemon Aspen Pilsner was the last Sobah beer in the range that I got around to trying, and boy am I upset this is the case! Don’t be like me, read on below.

The Sobah Lemon Aspen Pilsner is a full bodied, tangy citrus filled and lightly bitter beer from Sobah. With a balance of fruit and sweetness the Aspen Pils is for anyone looking to enjoy the full body mouthfeel of a pils with a twist.

Sobah Lemon Aspen Taste

The Lemon Aspen Pils is led by flavours of Finger Lime and citrus before building into a tangy and full body. The Lemon Aspen Pils then has a light finish made up of light bready malt, citrus tang and bitterness.

The great level of carbonation and mouthfeel make it a favourite of the Sobah range (behind the Limited-Edition Stout!).

I drank mine ice cold and right out of the freezer and the crisp and bright flavours when at an ice-cold level are immaculate. As the beer warms the flavours round and the beer changes quite considerably in the glass.

I’d recommend drinking this one super cold and with a nice bratwurst!

Who is The Lemon Aspen Pills for?

The Lemon Aspen Pilsner is perfect for anyone who, much like we talked about under the Finger Lime Cerveza, enjoys a citrus noted tang from the finger lime and is into experiencing beers that are born to be different.

If you’re keen on the Finger Lime Cerveza you’re going to enjoy the Pils given the added depth and body it carries. The added bitterness was also quite enjoyable.

Is Sobah Beer Alcohol Free?

Sobah Beer contains less than 0.5% alcohol by volume (ABV) which means it is considered to be alcohol free. The Sobah Beer range is considered to be food and is regulated under the Food Standards Australia and New Zealand Regime.

Comparing the Sobah Beer range to research findings from the University of Kaiserslautern in Germany, it can be seen that the Sobah Beer range contains the same, or in some cases, less alcohol than fruit juices and common foods such as bread!

Given the alcohol free nature of the Sobah range, you will notice there is a nutritional panel on each can, just like the one above. This is great because you get to know exactly what is in your non-alcoholic beer, but also because the labelling of non-alcoholic beer is regulated by the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Regulator.

Sobah Beer Pros and Cons

The Sobah Beer range is unique and a lineup of beers that is likely to divide the room due to its unapologetically curated and craft flavour profile. Below are some things to keep in mind and some things you’ll love about the range.

Things you’ll love Things to keep in mind
Unique and individual beers May stray too far from the ‘expected’ norm for some beer drinkers.
Uses amazing Australian sourced ingredients Finger Lime Cerveza can be big on flavour – keep in mind if you’re looking for a softer Cerveza
Easy to drink and sessionable The amazing Stout is no longer available!

When to Drink Sobah Beer

The Sobah Beer is best enjoyed ice cold, with friends and food. The Pepperberry IPA is great as an aperitif with some snacks before dinner, the Finger Lime Cerveza and Lemon Aspen go perfectly with dinner and I would always enjoy the delectable liquorice noted stout as I wound down for an eventing.

The versatility of the Sobah range is a positive and with a wide distribution it is easy to access and find cold on your way to any Sunday session, no matter how unorganised you are!

Final Thoughts: The Round Up

Overall, the core Sobah Beer range is a solid lineup that will, like we’ve chatted through above, likely divide the room. Some people will love the flavours and others who are looking for traditional flavours will likely look elsewhere – and that’s totally okay!

If you’re into trying something new, exploring a really great lineup of unique and complex flavours that you’re never going to find elsewhere, then this is the range of non-alcoholic beer for you.

If you’re looking for a more traditional lager then by all means give them a go or divert your pennies to some of the non-alcoholic lagers I’ve written about in a mega-post over here.

Personally, I loved the limited edition stout and will keep my eyes out for it if it lands again. I also really like the Pepperberry IPA and Aspen Pils when I’m looking for something a bit different and out of the ordinary.

If you’re interested in giving them a go, check out the links below for where to buy
